The Promised Seed - Pastor Sabu Thomas
Jesus' journey from Gethsemane to Calvary's cross can be divided into two parts: the first from Gethsemane to the judgment seat of Pilate and second from the judgment seat to the cross of Calvary.
Jesus was dressed in a purple robe and wore a crown of thorns before His crucifixion. Whatever happened in Jesus' life was a fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy .The soldiers dressed him that way only to mock him but little did they realize that they were fulfilling prophecy .Jesus was called the Carpenter's Son, but He was indeed the Son of the great Carpenter who designed the entire universe.
Jesus' public life was a secret to the devil. Jesus' ministry started at the age of 30 after He got baptised in the Jordan under the hand of John the baptist. We see two things happening at Jesus' baptism. Firstly, the Father acknowledges Jesus as His beloved Son. Secondly, the devil identifies Jesus as the seed of the woman who would bruise his head. The same thing happens to every believer at baptism. The Father acknowledges him/her as His beloved son and His beloved daughter at the same time he becomes an enemy of Satan. In the time of Jesus' temptation by the devil in the wilderness, Satan wanted to be clear whether Jesus was indeed the son of God, that’s why he says "If you are the Son of God..." . After Jesus didn’t succumb to any of the temptations and proved that He was the Son of God, Satan left Him.
God told the serpent in the garden of Eden "I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel."Genesis 3:15. For over 4000 years after this prophecy was given in Eden, Satan had been targeting the promised Seed. First Satan targeted Eve's offspring .Of the two, Cain was of the devil and he worked in Cain's mind to kill his brother Abel thinking he was the promised seed. After the flood during the time of Noah, Satan knew that the seed would come from the eight people who came out of the flood. Therefore he made Noah a drunkard and caused him to curse his descendants.
Years later, God called Abraham out of Ur of the Chaldeans and Satan heard God blessing Abraham and the blessing being extended to his descendants .He prevented Sarah from conceiving till her childbearing age was past. Nothing could stop Isaac, the child of promise from being born. He made Rebekkah, Isaac's wife barren, but however she conceived and bore two sons Jacob and Esau when Isaac prayed for her. Of Jacob's two wives, Leah was unloved but Rachel was loved. Satan knew the seed would come from her whom Jacob loved so he closed Rachel's womb. But God however remembered Rachel and opened her womb and she bore Joseph and Benjamin.
After 430 years of Israelites 'servitude in Egypt under Pharoah, Satan worked in Pharoah's mind to kill all the male children under 2 years of age. God however spared Moses and he was brought up in the palace as the son of pharoah's daughter. Here too Satan's attempts were futile.
In 650 B.C, Isaiah prophesied "Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son."Isaiah 7:14. When Joseph wanted to put away Mary secretly after she was found with child, God revealed to Joseph in a dream that the child she was carrying was the promised Seed. The truth about Mary's virginity was thus hidden from Satan who supposed the child to be Joseph's. Satan again worked in Herod's mind when he made the proclamation that all male children under 2 years should be killed. But God revealed Satan's schemes to Joseph a number of times in dreams thus protecting the promised Seed.
The first 30 years of Jesus' life was a time of darkness, there was no prophecy, no worship or fear of God in people, each walked in his own way. It is after this period that Satan come face to face with the Seed of the woman who is to bruise his head. Many a times Satan tried to destroy the Seed, but in vain. Once Satan worked in people's minds to push Jesus down the mountain, another time the wind and storm were aroused to destroy Jesus sleeping in the boat. Satan was targeting the One who would shed His blood to wash away the sins of Adamic descendants, the One who had the power to destroy death.
When Jesus was born, it was the people who belonged to the lowest strata of society, the shepherds who came first to visit Him .Bethlehem was a place of pasture where sheep were reared for the Passover sacrifice. Every new born sheep was examined by the shepherd whether there was any blemish. Only those that were male, one year old and without blemish were separated for the sacrifice. Therefore the shepherds came to examine the baby who would become the Passover "Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world".
After Jesus' birth he's seen as a boy in the temple debating with the priests there. According to the Law of Moses every Jewish boy of 10 years was examined by the priests on his knowledge of the Scriptures. The priests were astonished at Jesus' understanding and wisdom. Before His crucifixion, Jesus was taken 7 times to six courts to be tried. No one could find a fault in Him and Pilate washed his hands of Jesus’ blood .When Jesus breathed His last, the centurion certified that Jesus was indeed the Son of God. When the blood of Jesus, the Lamb without blemish fell on the ground at Calvary's cross, Satan's head was bruised. Jesus is coming for a bride "not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish". Eph5:27
Before Jesus was taken to Pilate, He was arrayed in a purple robe and a crown of thorns, the crown symbolizing king and purple signifying priest .Jesus fulfilled the offices of prophet, priest and king. The gifts that the wise men brought to Jesus at His birth had these symbolisms- gold depicting Jesus as the King of Kings, frankincense showing Him as the Great High Priest and myrrh pointing out Jesus as the True Prophet. On the top of the cross, it was written "Jesus, King of the Jews" in 3 different languages- Roman, Hebrew and Greek . It was written for people of different tongues that Jesus was the King of all. When passersby read it, it was offensive to some and they asked to have it erased. But Pilate said what was written could be changed.
What makes Jesus stand out from other kings is that while others were made kings, Jesus was a born King. The wise men from the East came to king Herod saying" Where is He who has been born King of the Jews."Mathew 2:4.Jesus, the King anointed by God is born to reign and born to rule.
When Adam disobeyed God, God cursed the ground. He told Adam "Cursed is the ground for your sake; in toil you shall eat of it all the days of your life. Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you."Genesis 3:17, 18. Till then the earth did not bring forth thorns and thistles. When Jesus, the second Adam wore the crown of thorns on His head He was taking the curse of the ground upon Himself so that we would be redeemed.
Jesus wore a purple robe - purple standing for sin. Purple was the robe of great Babylon. In the parable of rich man and Lazarus, the rich man was dressed in purple. When the soldiers put on Jesus a purple robe, Jesus was being clothed with the sin of the entire world. He who was without sin, who "resisted to bloodshed, striving against sin". Heb 12:4 was clothed in sin. Jesus wearing the purple robe and crown of thorns was taking the sin and curse upon Himself so that we would be free from the burden of sin and curse and walk in the blessing of God.
When Jesus came into the house of Zaccheus, He said to him "Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is son of Abraham". Luke 19:9. Though Zaccheus was a son of Abraham, his house could receive salvation only through the Saviour Jesus.
The woman who had been bound by a spirit of infirmity for 18 years was also a daughter of Abraham but could be healed only through Jesus.
The blessing of Abraham comes not through Isaac and Jacob but through Jesus. "In your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed."Acts 3:25.The blessing of Abraham are not just for the Jews who are literally the descendants of Abraham but to every nation, tribe and tongue who call on His name .The blessing of Jesus is upon every nation, city or house who lifts His name. Galatians 3:13 says "Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law,...that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith." This blessing of Abraham comes to the believer through faith in Jesus." For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. "Gal 3:26. God doesn’t make any distinction between Jew or Greek, slave or free, for we who have put on Christ are all one in Christ. We all drink from one Cup and eat of one Bread. Jesus’ body was broken when he was scourged and beaten so that we might be made one."For we, though many, are one bread and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread."1 Cor 10:17
